Today WordPress has released another bug-fixed version of WordPress 2.8. It is strongly advised to upgrade to 2.8.1 beta from 2.8 for some security reasons.
Though WordPress tried hard to giveaway a bug-free version of WordPress with the version 2.8, some serious bugs were found on several administrative cases which could leak your security. That’s why WordPress has released 2.8.1 beta so early.
Those who don’t like to try or use beta version, are strongly advised not to stay with WordPress 2.8. Be cautious, WordPress 2.8 was detected as a harmful version of wordpress and you can avoid security holes by just a simple click which will upgrade your wordpress version to 2.8.1.

Inisde your admin panel, you will always see a message asking you to upgrade to wordpress 2.8.1 beta. On the other hand, you can anytime upgrade your wordpress version from Upgrade menu under the “Tools” options.

Note: Before you upgrade, please make sure you make a backup of your database on your hard drive or somewhere else. If your wordpress files (images, documents and others) and database (all posts, pages and links) are lost, you will fall in a desert and those might be unrecoverable. Though it is rare, you can create a backup of your database and entire wordpress files. The process is described in WordPress codex — where code is poetry!

New in WordPress 2.8.1 beta

Besides bug fixes, some new features have been included in the latest beta version of WordPress. Some of them are highlighted below:

  • Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
  • Dashboard memory usage is reduced.  Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
  • The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
  • A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
  • Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
  • Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.
  • Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.
  • Stricter menu security.
  • Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.
  • RTL layout fixes.
