The first umbrella!
Why do we use Umbrella? Do you remember any stuff named umbrella? Ok, I’ll remind you. It is something we hold over our head to save our head from the scorching heat of the sun. We also use it when it is raining although it has no use when it rains cats and dogs. Instead, it becomes a problem to handle in the windy weather.
Few days ago, the day before hail storm hit dhaka, I went outside my home to buy a newspaper. It was evening. Newspaper becomes valueless when the day is over. But for me, it is valued for ever as my writings were published that day. Anyway, I went out towards the newspaper store. It was a bit far from my home. I was not really walking, I was running as the sky was lightning and the cloud was shouting terribly. Everyone besides the street was getting ready for a ‘destructive’ kal-baishakhi storm (the deadly storm that occurs in or before the first month of Bangla year, Baishakh, is called Kal-baishakhi jhor or storm). Nobody was really ready for the storm as the day was too hot. It was like the sun is never to be set. But nothing can stop the rule of universe. After sunset, the weather became cold and windy. The evening city was getting ready for the storm. Everyone was running towards their home to avoid the storm. But I did vice-versa. I went out having an umbrella with me. I don’t know why I felt a bit embarrassed having an umbrella at my hands. Perhaps that was the first umbrella came out while the sky was giving signal of the upcoming stormy season, summer.
I live in the Mirpur section 1 area of the capital city of Bangladesh. Mirpur-1 is a quite busy area. Almost twenty-four hours it remains busy. It has got more than ten shopping malls and even more super markets are being constructed. Soon mirpur-1 will be named as the place of market or Shopping Area. For example, Tejgaon Industrial Area, Dhanmondi Resindential Area etc. Mirpur will be Shopping Area in the near future, I guess.
People’s gathering gets more and more especially from the afternoon to evening. That day, I saw a huge number of people crowded in the street. Most of them were running fast so that they can reach their destination before rain starts. The shopkeepers besides foot-path were seen too much busy in covering their goods with plastic papers. Their shop is a little spaced. So they display their goods putting them on the street which generally makes problem for the people walking through the footpath.
Suddenly the rain began. People had no umbrella or anything like that. But I had one. Thanks to the almighty I didn’t forget to bring the umbrella with me while getting out of my home. I opened my umbrella and held it over my head. Thus, I saved myself from cats and dogs rain. I think, I was the first in the area to have an umbrella. Some people were looking at me. Their eyes were requesting to give them a lift under my umbrella! I didn’t care that. If I let anyone else come under same umbrella, I couldn’t save myself from getting wet. But I remember a girl looked at me having same request from her eyes. I didn’t care, too. But now I’m repenting. I should have given her a lift, Right?
After a few moments, I saw more people are holding umbrellas over their heads. Yes, now that became a perfect view of a rainy evening.
